information
●The section of the Ban'etsu West Line between Koriyama and Aizu-Wakamatsu—the eastern portion of the line connecting the Koriyama and Niigata regions—is electrified and serves as a vital link between various cities and Aizu-Wakamatsu, facilitated by its connection to the Tohoku Shinkansen. The route passes through scenic landscapes, including Mount Bandai and Lake Inawashiro, and has long been a destination for specialized tourist trains. In 2015, the "Fruity" (Furutia) train was introduced—a service converted from 719-series suburban electric train cars. The two-car consist featured the *Kushi 718-701*—equipped with a chic, black-and-red café counter and restrooms—and the *Kumoha 719-701*, which primarily offered box-style seating. Passengers could enjoy coffee and light refreshments, with a focus on sweets made using ingredients from Fukushima Prefecture. The train operated mainly on weekends and holidays, and occasionally ran in the Sendai area as well.
Initially, the "Fruity" operated as an additional unit coupled to regular 719-series train services on the Ban'etsu West Line. However, once the regular 719-series fleet was entirely replaced by the successor E721-series trains, the "Fruity" began operating as an independent service. It concluded its run in 2023, passing its role on to a successor train.
