information
●The 223 series was introduced on the Hanwa Line in 1994 to coincide with the opening of the Kansai Airport Line. Based on the 221 series—a suburban train type that JR West was expanding its fleet with at the time—the 223 series features a lightweight stainless-steel body and VVVF inverter control. Since its debut, various iterations have been developed for different lines, and it remains a core part of the JR West fleet. Initially, the trains were configured as 6-car base sets and 2-car auxiliary sets; it was also common to see 4-car formations created by coupling two 2-car auxiliary sets together.
In 1999, to improve access to the Wakayama area and launch the "Kansai Airport/Kishu-ji Rapid" service, the fleet was reconfigured into 5-car base sets and 3-car auxiliary sets. The additional lead cars required for this change were introduced as the 223-2500 series. In 2008, another round of reconfiguration took place to standardize all trains into 4-car sets. This resulted in a diverse range of formations—some created by inserting 2500-series intermediate cars into 3-car sets, and others formed by combining 0-series intermediate cars (removed from 5-car sets) with newly built 2500-series cars—leading to trains composed of cars from different sub-series.
This product represents a group that remained composed entirely of 0-series cars even after the reconfigurations. It depicts the trains as they appeared up until around 2014—before the installation of fall-prevention barriers on the front of the lead cars and prior to the "life-extension" (refurbishment) upgrades—allowing you to enjoy the aesthetic of a uniform, consistent train formation.
Additionally, in response to many requests, we are offering a standalone 2500-series trailer intermediate car as part of our "MA's Choice" selection. This versatile piece can be used for various purposes, such as recreating the appearance of a train being ferried from the manufacturer, integrating it into existing 3-car sets, or converting a powered car from an existing product into a non-powered (trailer) car.
