The Taki 9900 was developed in 1962 as the next generation gasoline transport tank car to replace the previous Taki 3000. Its main features are that it was the first in Japan to adopt a frameless structure, partially eliminating the underframe at the bottom of the car body, and that it used a variable diameter tank with a larger diameter only in the center of the car body. These innovations allowed it to secure a larger load capacity (35 tons) with a lighter weight than the Taki 3000. The Taki 9900 was a huge hit, and at its peak there were over 500 cars in service, but all of them have now been retired.
