Information
●The Ou Main Line, which connects Fukushima and Aomori via Yamagata and Akita, departs from Fukushima and branches off to the Tohoku Main Line, where it tackles the steep Itaya Pass, the first hurdle crossing the Ou Mountains, the backbone of the Tohoku region. In 1968, the Tohoku Main Line was fully electrified with AC, and the Itaya Pass section up to Yonezawa was also switched from DC to AC. At the same time, the Itaya Pass, which had previously been a bottleneck for transportation, was double-tracked, significantly improving the situation. The ED78 was introduced for use on the Ou Main Line, as well as the Senzan Line and Ban'etsu West Line, which have axle load restrictions. On the Ou Main Line, it hauled the Akebono sleeper express, 50 series passenger cars, and freight trains.
◆ Equipped with a newly developed slotless motor as standard
By adopting a newly developed slotless motor, it demonstrates smoother and quieter running performance than existing motors.
