●The EF65 0 series was developed as a DC freight locomotive for flat lines, aiming to improve upon the EF60, which lacked sufficient acceleration performance in the medium to high speed range, and to promote standardization. As more units were produced, they played a key role in the progress of electrification of freight trains on various lines, with a total of 135 units manufactured by 1970.
Even after the transition to JR, they primarily served as freight train locomotives, but those inherited by JR Central also handled the pulling of 14-series passenger cars and joy-trains. In particular, unit 111 was used to pull the , demonstrating its versatility beyond its original role as a freight locomotive.
