The Taki 9900 was developed in 1962 as the next generation of gasoline transport tank cars. Its main features are the frameless structure, which partially omits the underframe at the bottom of the car body, and the use of a variable diameter tank, with the tank diameter only being larger in the center of the car body. This succeeded in increasing the loading capacity while keeping the car body length small. 546 cars had been manufactured by 1966, and were owned by various companies and used all over Japan, but all of them were retired by 2008 due to the mass production of successor cars.
