After the post-war chaos subsided around 1950, there was a growing momentum to research further speed improvements for railway rolling stock. Odakyu Electric Railway considered connecting Shinjuku and Odawara in 60 minutes, but the conventional vehicle structure was heavy and limited its ability to achieve high speeds. As a result, the Romancecar 3000 series Super Express (commonly known as SE) appeared in 1957 as a groundbreaking lightweight train with a fundamentally redesigned structure. Developed jointly with Japanese National Railways, it incorporated several new technologies, including a monocoque structure where the underframe and body were integrated using aircraft technology, extremely slim walls achieved by not considering downgrading and reviewing materials, and an articulated body to lower the center of gravity and reduce the number of bogies. However, its service life was set at 10 years. Combined with its bright paint scheme, which was unlike that of conventional trains, it not only improved the image of Odakyu Romancecars, but in September 1957 it was loaned to Japanese National Railways for high-speed testing, achieving a top speed record of 145 km/h on narrow gauge lines between Kannami and Numazu. The results of these tests were later utilized in the development of the JNR 151 series and the Shinkansen. The 3000 series SE underwent several modifications, including the installation of air conditioning twice and being shortened to a five-car formation for direct service on the Gotemba Line. It remained in service for much longer than originally planned, and all units were retired in 1992. As of 2025, three units are carefully preserved at the Romancecar Museum.
