Information
●The EF66 0-series (late-production model)—a locomotive that hauled "Blue Train" sleeper services on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines from the final years of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) era onwards—makes its debut as a fully revamped model. It possesses the tractive power to haul a 15-car passenger train (equipped with LED interior lighting) up a 4% gradient, making it suitable for a wide variety of layout configurations.
The prototype locomotive was introduced in 1968, featuring a 50% increase in power output over the EF65 to meet the demand for high-speed freight transport. While it served primarily as a freight locomotive on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines for many years, it was selected in 1985 to haul "Blue Train" sleeper services on the same routes. Following the transition from JNR to JR West, the entire fleet was stationed at the Shimonoseki Depot (currently the Shimonoseki General Rolling Stock Depot); there, the locomotives underwent modifications to suit passenger train operations and continued to serve as the primary motive power for "Blue Train" services on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines.

◆ Equipped with a newly developed slotless motor as standard
By adopting a newly developed slotless motor, it demonstrates smoother and quieter running performance than existing motors.
