●The Ou Main Line, which connects Fukushima and Aomori via Yamagata and Akita, departs Fukushima and branches off to the Tohoku Main Line, where it tackles the steep Itaya Pass, the first hurdle crossing the Ou Mountains, the backbone of the Tohoku region. In 1968, the Tohoku Main Line was fully electrified with AC, and the Itaya Pass section up to Yonezawa was also switched from DC to AC. At the same time, the line was double-tracked, significantly improving the Itaya Pass, which had previously been a bottleneck for transportation. The EF71 was introduced as a dedicated locomotive for the Ou Main Line. The EF71 was an F-type locomotive, rare among AC electric locomotives, and was the first to feature regenerative braking. Specifically designed for the Itaya Pass, it served as a helper locomotive for the Kiha 181 series Tsubasa and other trains. It was also used in combination with an ED78 to pull local trains carrying 50 series passenger cars.
