The Yo 8000 series conductor's van was introduced in 1974 to replace the conductor's vans and covered brake vans that had been used up until then, and is notable for its design based on the conductor's compartment of the Kokifu 50000 series.
Even after the attachment of conductor's vans to freight trains was abolished at the end of the JNR era, a small number are still in use today, such as on oversized freight trains.
