●The EF81 is a dual-voltage electric locomotive developed in 1968.
Units based at the Aomori Rolling Stock Center played an active role hauling the "Akebono" and "Hakutsuru" sleeper limited express trains; however, following the discontinuation of the "Hakutsuru" service in 2003, units 136 and 139 were modified with "dual-head" couplers to enable tasks such as hauling electric trainsets to and from maintenance facilities.
While they previously hauled the "Akebono" over the entire route between Ueno and Aomori, operations were revised in 2009 so that the EF64 model handled the Ueno–Nagaoka section, leaving the EF81s to operate the Nagaoka–Aomori section.
