Information
The Blue Train Series 20, a limited express sleeper passenger car that holds a significant place in Japan's railway history, debuted in October 1958, during Japan's period of rapid economic growth, for use on the "Asakaze" limited express train. The Series 20 featured a fixed-formation system, unprecedented in passenger cars at the time, all cars equipped with fixed windows, air conditioning and heating, improved ride comfort thanks to air-spring bogies, and the introduction of a power car to supply electricity to each carriage. These groundbreaking features made it a highly successful train, connecting Tokyo and Hakata in just over 17 hours.

Its exterior also showcased a harmonious blend of curved ends and rounded body, with the flowing lines created by the three cream-colored stripes against the blue body further enhancing its modern image. The conversion of the limited express "Asakaze" to the 20 series was immensely popular and became affectionately known as the "Blue Train," solidifying its position as a pioneer of limited express sleeper trains that followed, such as "Sakura," "Hayabusa," "Mizuho," and "Izumo."
