JR E231 Series-500 Yamanote Line (First Train)
Basic 8 Cars + 3 Cars Add-On
11 Cars Set
information
The E231-500 series entered commercial service in April 2002, replacing the 205 series prior to the introduction of D-ATC on the Yamanote Line.
These cars were the first JR trains in the Tokyo metropolitan area to use LCD screens for information, installed above each door.
In addition, as a congestion relief measure, the 6-door car that had previously been attached to car 10 was now attached to car 7, bringing the total number of 6-door cars in the train to two.
In 2010, with the installation of platform gates at each station, the existing 6-door cars were replaced, and newly manufactured 4-door Saha E231 cars were installed in cars 7 and 10.
Starting in 2015 with the introduction of the new E235 series trains, these cars began to be transferred to the Chuo and Sobu Lines, and all cars had been replaced by January 2020.
