Information
Seibu Railway's history of paid express service began with the 5000 series "Red Arrow," introduced in 1969 to coincide with the opening of the Chichibu Line. The 10000 series "New Red Arrow" was introduced in 1993 to replace the aging 5000 series and for the new "Koedo" limited express service on the Shinjuku Line. The 10000 series features an urban look with a three-tone gray base and a red stripe. The interior features a 1070mm seat pitch for improved comfort, but due to the relatively short ride time, only two service areas such as restrooms are installed per train. The running gear was based on the proven 101 series and 5000 series to accommodate the Chichibu Line's mountainous terrain. By 2003, 12 seven-car trains had been manufactured, each with its own unique features, including the number of roof ventilators, the number and shape of louvers in the service area of the front car, and the running gear. Starting around 2000, various changes were made, including the installation of fall prevention canopies, simplification of the paint on the end faces, removal of some steps, reupholstering the interior of car 4 (smoking car), installation of forced ventilation systems (later made non-smoking), replacement of seats in all cars, and changes to air conditioners and SIVs. In 2019, the 001 series "Laview" was introduced, replacing the Chichibu Line limited express trains. As of 2025, five 10000 series trains are still in service as the "Koedo" limited express train, but it has been announced that they will be replaced by successor cars in 2026.
