The EF62 type was introduced in 1963 to tow trains passing through Usui Pass on the Shinetsu Main Line, and after JNR was privatized it was assigned to Tabata Depot and was used to tow express Noto and freight trains between Kuroi and Nihongi, but after regular service ended in 1993 it was used for special trains until the Usui Pass section was abolished.
A C' antenna was fitted to the front from around 1990.
