JNR EF81-300 1st generation Rose (Tabata Locomotive Depot)

Of the four EF81-300 locomotives that appeared for the Kanmon Tunnel, the first batch of locomotives, No. 301 and No. 302, were transferred to Uchigo Locomotive Depot in 1978 to replace the EF80s used on the Joban Line.

Due to visibility issues when used on the Joban Line, both locomotives were distinctively painted in the same red No. 13 as the other EF81s.

After being transferred to Tabata Locomotive Depot in 1982, they were also used to pull passenger trains such as the sleeper express "Yuzuru" and express "Towada" that run on the Joban Line.

In 1985-86, they were transferred to Moji Locomotive Depot and began to be used on the Kanmon section again, but continued to be used in red No. 13 paint until they were scrapped.
