The EF81 type appeared in 1968 as a general-purpose electric locomotive with three power supplies for both DC and AC 50 / 60Hz.
As a towing machine of the 24 series Twilight Express that appeared in 1989, 6 cars have been changed to special paint colors.
In 2002, silver was added to the top and bottom of the yellow belt in line with the renewal of the passenger car.
