The "Ogaki Yako" (Ogaki Night Train) originated when a famous locomotive-hauled passenger train connecting Tokyo and Osaka was shortened to the Tokyo–Ogaki route and converted to an electric train service; this change was part of a major reorganization of overnight local trains necessitated by the expansion of Shinkansen services following the timetable revision of October 1968. Initially operated using the 153 series from the Ogaki Train Depot, the service later utilized a mix of 155 and 159 series trains before standardizing on the 165 series in 1982. Although classified as a local train, its overnight nature made it highly valued—serving as a final train home for commuters in the Tokyo metropolitan area and as a convenient starting point for travelers heading to the Kansai region. Additionally, because it shared rolling stock with the "Tokai" express service, the inclusion of two Green Cars (premium-class carriages)—a rarity for local trains—proved popular. Operations continued following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways (JNR), with the 165 series remaining in service until March 1996. It was subsequently rebranded as the "Moonlight Nagara" rapid service using JR Central's 373 series, before transitioning to an occasional special service in 2009. The rolling stock was later changed to JR East's 183/189 and 185 series, and the service was officially discontinued in 2021.
