The 183 series 0-series is a DC limited express train that debuted in 1972.
Manufactured with the aim of upgrading some express trains to limited express trains following the opening of the Sobu Rapid Line between Tokyo and Kinshicho and the electrification of the Uchibo and Sotobo Lines, all vehicles were introduced to the Makuhari Train Depot.
In 1985, some of the 183 series trains at the Makuhari Train Depot were changed to 6-car single-class formations, and additional cars were added to create 9-car formations using through doors during peak seasons.
