The 209-2100 series is a commuter train that began operation in 2009 with the aim of replacing the 113 and 211 series trains that were operating in the Boso area.
All vehicles were converted from vehicles that had been used on other lines, and modifications included the installation of semi-cross seating in the leading cars and toilets in the intermediate cars.
There were 6-car and 4-car formations, and until March 2021, they were operated as 10-car formations by coupling these two types of trains together.
