● The 24 series sleeper express "Hokutosei" debuted in 1988 to coincide with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel connecting Honshu and Hokkaido, operating between Ueno and Sapporo. It was well-received for its hotel-like service, and at its peak, three round trips were operated. The passenger cars used for the "Hokutosei" included many types and various facilities, but among them, four Oha 25 500 series cars were introduced between 1988 and 1989 as lounge cars belonging to JR East. The exterior was decorated with a shooting star design, and in addition to the lounge area, the interior was equipped with shower rooms and vending machines, adding to the luxurious atmosphere of the train.
