Information
The 223-2000 series is a group of trains introduced starting in 1999 with the aim of replacing the 113 and 117 series trains that remained on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines.
Unlike the earlier 223 series, this train features a significantly redesigned body structure, interior, and exterior.
Since 2015, anti-fall barriers have been installed on the outside of the front of the trains for safety reasons when coupling them, changing the appearance of the front.
These trains are mainly operated on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines (between Maibara and Kamigori), as well as the Hokuriku Main Line (between Tsuruga and Maibara), the Kosei Line (between Omi-Shiotsu and Kyoto), the Kusatsu Line (between Kusatsu and Tsuge), and the Ako Line (between Aioi and Banshu-Ako).
