The KuMoHa 40 series is a double-cab electric train that appeared in 1932 and was the Ministry of Railways' first 20m-class motorized car.
It was used to add cars to trains in the Tokyo metropolitan area, such as on the Chuo and Sobu lines, but from the 1950s onwards it was used on regional lines such as the Ome and Itsukaichi lines and for local transport in the Takasaki area.
