The 223-2000 series is a commuter train that was introduced in 1999 to replace the 113 and 117 series electric trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines.
Based on the 1000 series, with cost reductions, over 600 cars were manufactured by 2008, making it the most popular series.
The first batch of cars was introduced between 1999 and 2000, and compared to the later batches, these have smoked window glass and are coupled with Moha 222-2000 series cars which omit some equipment.
Since around 2015, fall prevention canopies have been installed on the leading cars, the service number displays have been removed, and wipers have been added above the connecting doors to some cars.
