Information
The Niigata Rolling Stock Center's K formation was painted in JNR express livery and was equipped with interior light-dimming devices and ATS-P for service within the Tokyo metropolitan area. It was active on the Moonlight Echigo overnight rapid service between Shinjuku and Niigata, and the Noto express service after the retirement of the 489 series Kanazawa cars.
Even after its retirement from overnight train service, K1 formation continued to be used on the Hokuetsu limited express and Kubikino rapid service along with T18 formation, but was retired in March 2015 when these trains were discontinued.
