●The Hakkoda Express is a passenger express train that runs along the Tohoku Main Line between Ueno and Aomori. It debuted in 1961, and during the 1960s and 1970s, it was the vanguard of overnight trains heading to the Tohoku region, departing Ueno Station at 7 p.m. and connecting well with the Seikan Ferry from Aomori to Hokkaido. After departing Ueno, it would travel to Wakkanai, Abashiri, or Obihiro the next day, and was popular with young travelers nicknamed the "Crab Tribe" for their style of carrying large backpacks. Sleeper cars were added on the late-night section between Sendai and Aomori, and the train was heavily used as an express train, stopping frequently at cities in the Tohoku region.
