The 117 series is a commuter train that was introduced in 1979 with the aim of improving passenger service between Keihanshin.
The (SUN Liner) was a rapid train that ran between Okayama and Fukuyama, introduced in March 1989 and later renamed (Sunliner).
When the number of trains was increased in 1992, surplus 117 series trains were introduced and the train was given a new look with a special paint job featuring a white base with a yellow and red gradation, which attracted a lot of attention.
After that, the train continued to operate after being converted to a one-man operation, but in its later years the paint job was simplified and the Sunliner paint job was finally discontinued in 2016.
