The EF64-1000 is a DC electric locomotive for gradient lines that was introduced in 1980 to replace old electric locomotives on the Takasaki and Joetsu lines.
After the privatization of Japanese National Railways, the trains belonging to JR Freight underwent renewal work from around 2003, and some of the carriages had their paintwork changed, but since 2017 they have been repainted in Japanese National Railways colors and are still in use.
