JR East introduced the E926 series in 2001 as a successor to the 925 series electric track comprehensive test car that had been used up until now. The biggest difference from previous inspection cars is that it was designed based on the E3 series for direct Shinkansen/local service, which allows it to inspect the Yamagata Shinkansen and Akita Shinkansen, and it is also equipped with a 50/60Hz frequency switch and retarder brake switch device, allowing it to inspect the Hokuriku Shinkansen. The nickname for the new inspection car was "East-i," a combination of the initials of "Intelligent," "Integrated," and "Inspection," and "East," which stands for JR East. Since its introduction, it has been seen in action on all of JR East's Shinkansen lines. One thing worth noting is that only the intermediate track inspection car (E926-3) has a spare car (E926-13), and when the East-i is unable to run due to being undergoing inspection, etc., the E2 series can be seen running with only the track inspection car coupled, which is an unusual sight.
