information
The 183 series 1000 series is a DC limited express train that was introduced in 1974 to replace the 181 series of the Joetsu Line's El limited express "Toki" and the 157 series of the Izu-bound limited express "Amagi", which were aging.
Initially, the 183 series 0 and 189 series were used on the Chuo Line's limited express "Azusa," but with the opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen, the limited express "Toki" vehicles were transferred and began operating in 1982.
In 1987, after the privatization of Japan National Railways, the "Upgrade Azusa" was introduced with upgraded interior equipment and paintwork to compete with the Chuo Expressway's express buses.
The upgraded configuration was used not only for the limited express "Azusa" but also for the "Shonan-Shinjuku Liner," which started operating between Shinjuku and Odawara at the time, and the "Wing Azusa," which ran an extended service from Chiba to Narita Airport. Did.
Up to 1990, eight upgraded formations appeared, but from 1992 to 1993 the paint was changed again to Azusa color with Alpine Blue and Fantasy Violet on Foggy Gray.
