The EF64 0 series has appeared as a standard locomotive for graded lines based on the EF62 / EF63. The output is the same as the EF65 for flat line sections, but it is equipped with dynamic braking that can obtain stable braking force on steep slopes, and for that purpose it features a large side filter. The primary type is equipped with electric heating for both passengers. Prototypes and primary models were introduced between Fukushima and Yamagata (DC electrification at that time), and mass-produced machines after that were mainly introduced to the Chuo Main Line and Shinonoi Line.
