information
●The JR Shikoku 2000 series is a class of limited express diesel multiple units (DMUs) developed by JR Shikoku to increase train speeds on the Dosan Line, a route characterized by a challenging, winding alignment through the Shikoku Mountains. These trains represent the world’s first mass-produced tilting DMUs (following the experimental JNR Kiha 391 series) and were the first tilting rail vehicles in Japan to feature an active (controlled) tilting system. The N2000 series is an improved variant of the 2000 series, originally built for service on the Kotoku Line. While both series have long been used for major limited express services across Shikoku, their operational range has recently begun to shrink due to the introduction of newer, successor train models. For the units still in service as of 2024, various upgrades have been implemented—though the specific modifications vary by series and depot—including the installation of full-color LED destination displays, the replacement of bogies, and the conversion of headlights to LED. Currently, the 2000 series is primarily used on the *Ashizuri* (Kochi–Nakamura/Sukumo) and *Uwakai* (Matsuyama–Uwajima) limited express services, while the N2000 series is also employed on the *Uwakai* service; both series are frequently used as substitute trains for various other limited express services as well.
◆ Equipped with a newly developed slotless motor as standard
By adopting a newly developed slotless motor, it demonstrates smoother and quieter running performance than existing motors.
