Five of the EF10-type locomotives assigned to the Moji Locomotive Depot—which were used for operations through the Kanmon Tunnel—had their exterior body panels replaced with stainless steel in 1953 (Showa 28) as a countermeasure against salt damage. Notably, unit No. 24 remained unpainted, giving it a unique and striking appearance.
These locomotives were used extensively to haul both passenger and freight trains, remaining in service until they were replaced by the EF30 type in 1961 (Showa 36). Following their replacement, they were transferred to the Shin-Tsurumi Locomotive Depot, where they were repainted in a "grape" (dark brown) color and continued in active service.

By adopting a newly developed slotless motor, it demonstrates smoother and quieter running performance than existing motors.
