The Rumoi Main Line spanned 66.8 km between Fukagawa and Mashike. The entire line remained non-electrified from the time it opened; following the privatization and division of the Japanese National Railways (JNR), the route was primarily served by KiHa 54, KiHa 150, and KiHa 40 series diesel railcars.
The section between Rumoi and Mashike was closed in December 2016, followed by the closure of the section between Ishikari-Numata and Rumoi on April 1, 2023. The remaining segment between Fukagawa and Ishikari-Numata was also closed in March 2026, bringing an end to the line’s approximately 116-year history.
On March 31, 2026—the final day of operations for the Fukagawa–Ishikari-Numata section—trains consisting of three-car and two-car formations of the KiHa 54-500 series were operated.
