information
●The Kiha 185 series is a class of limited-express diesel multiple units (DMUs) built for the Shikoku region, with production beginning in 1986. Featuring lightweight stainless-steel bodies, each car is equipped with two DMF13HS engines (250 hp at 1,900 rpm)—with the exception of the Kiha 186 type, which has one—ensuring high-performance operation. Furthermore, as each car is equipped with its own auxiliary power supply, the series offers the flexibility to form train sets of varying lengths, from two-car configurations to longer consists. Production continued following the transition to JR in 1988, bringing the total number of units to 52. In 1992, 20 units were transferred to JR Kyushu; these underwent modifications—including the installation of a second engine and conversion to standard-class seating for the Kiha 186 type—and were subsequently deployed on limited-express services such as the "Yufu" and "Aso." As of 2019, the Kiha 185 series has been used for two "Omeshi" (imperial/state) train services on JR Kyushu. The first took place on November 18, 2002, covering a one-way route between Tabira-Hirado-guchi (on the Matsuura Railway) and Omura (on the Omura Line), while the second occurred from October 30 to 31, 2006, involving a round trip between Saga and Karatsu on the Karatsu Line. Both services utilized four-car formations, with a large Japanese national flag (Nisshoki) displayed on the front of the lead car. The "Tsurugisan" is a limited-express service operating between Tokushima and Awa-Ikeda; it was introduced in March 1996 following the upgrade of the "Yoshinogawa" express service to limited-express status. These trains are typically operated using Kiha 185 series units featuring a dedicated livery. Due to subsequent increases in service frequency, as of 2019, there are six inbound and seven outbound services, operated in formations ranging from two to four cars.
