●The 153 series was a type of electric train developed for semi-express and express services, primarily operating on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines as well as in the Boso region.
Units based at the Tamachi Train Depot were used for express services—most notably the "Izu"—as well as for local trains; however, they were replaced by the 185 series in 1981. During the transition period, the two series were sometimes operated in coupled formations.
Some of the SaRo 165 (first-class/green car) units were later modified to feature unit-sash windows.
