●The KiHa 40-1700 series is a variant of the 700 series—itself a one-man operation version of the 100 series (designed for extremely cold regions)—that has undergone further modifications to extend its service life.
In 2019, two KiHa 40-1700 units were refurbished as part of the "Sanshi-Suimei" series.
To enable their use as sightseeing and event trains, the "Sanshi-Suimei" series underwent not only exterior modifications but also interior upgrades, including the installation of wood-grain finishes, detachable tables, and roller blinds featuring illustrations of the *shima-enaga* (long-tailed tit).
