●The 14-series passenger coach (seating type) debuted in 1972, featuring amenities comparable to limited express rolling stock—such as simple reclining seats and heat-absorbing glass in the passenger compartment windows. From 1968 onwards, a network of high-speed trains connecting Shinkansen terminals with regional cities was expanded, and subsequent timetable revisions saw an increase in limited express services, partly through the upgrading of existing express trains. Consequently, the 12-series passenger coach—originally designed based on express-type electric train specifications—was sometimes deployed for limited express services. However, as the 12-series lacked the amenities expected of limited express rolling stock, the 14-series seating coach was developed. These coaches saw widespread service across the country, operating as extra limited express trains, group charter trains, and standard express trains.
