●The 0 Series was manufactured to coincide with the 1964 opening of the Tokaido Shinkansen. Early batches featured large side windows—earning them the nickname "Large-Window Cars"—while subsequent production shifted to the 1000 and 2000 series "Small-Window Cars"; a total of 3,216 cars were built by 1986. At their peak, there were 99 of the 16-car "Hikari" trainsets, which included a dining car, a buffet car, and two Green Cars. However, following the introduction of the successor 100 and 300 Series trains from 1985 onwards, these sets were gradually reconfigured for "Kodama" service or scrapped, and the 16-car configuration disappeared entirely by 1999. Towards the end of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) era, a trial involving high-frequency "Kodama" service using shortened trainsets between Kokura and Hakata proved popular. Consequently, following JNR's privatization, numerous 6-car "R-series" sets were formed and operated on "Kodama" and "West Hikari" services along the Sanyo Shinkansen. From 1995, the base body color was changed from ivory to white—matching the 100 Series and later models—to streamline maintenance, slightly altering the train's appearance. Further improvements included installing noise barriers beside the pantographs and changing the roof-shoulder louvers on the "21-type" lead car (facing the outbound direction) from a vertical to a horizontal orientation, allowing the series to continue operating alongside newer models. In March 1997, a new 4-car configuration was introduced for service west of Hiroshima; designated as the "Q-series" that autumn, these trains entered active service. However, the 4-car "P-series" (based on the 100 Series) debuted in the autumn of 2000, leading to the gradual retirement of the Q-series sets. Notably, the Q3 set was retained—with some intermediate cars swapped out—to serve as a training aid at the Shinkansen Crew Training Center. For over eight years, it was a familiar sight to many fans near Shin-Shimonoseki Station, but it quietly ended its service in January 2009 when it was hauled away by a 100-series train.
