●While the domestic production of electric locomotives in Japan had steadily advanced with models like the EF52 (1928) and EF53 (1932), these were exclusively for passenger service; freight trains still relied on foreign-made locomotives imported during the Taisho era. The EF10 was developed as the first domestic F-class freight locomotive to boost transport capacity in conjunction with the 1934 opening of the Tanna Tunnel and the extension of the Tokaido Line's electrified section to Numazu. Based on the proven EF53 design, the EF10 featured a gear ratio optimized for low-speed hauling power and design modifications—such as switching to single-axle leading trucks—that resulted in a lower top speed. Despite these changes, it was built upon established technical foundations; notably, it demonstrated high reliability even though it went straight into mass production of 16 units for the initial batch without a prototype. A total of 41 units were manufactured with varying configurations and specifications by 1941, serving as the mainstay of pre-war freight locomotives, particularly on the Tokaido Line. This model depicts the locomotive as it appeared while stationed at the Kozu Engine Depot after the body color had shifted to the brighter "Grape No. 2" shade around 1960, allowing you to enjoy the look of a classic supporting player from the golden age of the Tokaido Line's conventional lines.
