●The domestic production of electric locomotives in Japan had been steadily progressing with models like the EF52 (1928) and EF53 (1932); however, these were exclusively for passenger service, while freight trains relied on foreign-made locomotives imported during the Taisho era. The EF10 was developed as the first domestic F-class freight locomotive to boost transport capacity in anticipation of the Tōkaidō Main Line's electrified section extending to Numazu following the 1934 opening of the Tanna Tunnel. Based on the proven EF53 design, the EF10 featured a modified gear ratio prioritizing tractive effort for lower speeds and design adjustments—such as switching to a single-axle leading truck—to accommodate the lower top speed. Despite these changes, it was built upon established technical foundations; notably, it demonstrated high reliability even though it went straight into mass production of 16 units for the initial batch without a prototype. A total of 41 units were manufactured with varying configurations and specifications by 1941, serving as the mainstay of pre-war freight electric locomotives, primarily on the Tōkaidō Main Line. This model replicates the locomotive's appearance while stationed at the Kōzu Engine Depot around 1960—just before the livery shifted to the brighter "Grape No. 2" shade—capturing it in its prime during the era of the Tōkaidō Main Line's full electrification.
