JR Ou Main Line (Nostalgic Itaya Pass Passenger Train) 3 Cars
3 Cars Set
Locomotive + 2 passenger cars
(TOMIX Limited edition)
Information
●The Ou Main Line, connecting Fukushima and Akita, features the Itaya Pass—a section with a 33‰ gradient between Fukushima and Yonezawa—which was notorious as a difficult stretch during the era when locomotive-hauled trains were the norm.
Locomotives designed for steep grades played a key role here, including the 4100, 4110, and E10 classes during the steam era, and the EF16 class during the DC electrification period; when the line was converted to AC electrification in 1968, the powerful EF71 AC electric locomotive—built specifically for this section—was introduced to haul both freight and passenger trains.
Even after the transition to JR, this locomotive class continued to haul 50-series passenger coaches on local trains along the route; however, it was retired in August 1991 as the section between Fukushima and Yamagata was converted to standard gauge to accommodate through-service Shinkansen operations.
