In July 2002, ahead of the Tohoku Shinkansen's extension to Hachinohe, the "Kirakira Michinoku" sightseeing train debuted in the Aomori area. This three-car train, converted from KiHa 48 series rolling stock, featured a modified front-end design and large, fixed side windows. It was equipped with various amenities to enhance the travel experience, including single and double reclining seats, four-person box seats with tatami-mat flooring (arranged in a compartment style), and a "free space" area featuring large monitors and vending machines.
In 2011, the "Resort Umineko" was introduced, featuring a completely revamped appearance—shifting from a gray-and-white scheme with a red stripe to a blue-based design with an orange stripe—alongside an interior refurbishment. This train operated as a sightseeing service running along the coast, connecting the Hachinohe Line with the Sanriku Railway, before retiring in September 2020.
