●The KiHa 52 series is a high-power, general-purpose diesel railcar introduced in 1958, featuring two engines—an upgrade from the single-engine KiHa 20 series. While sharing a similar structural design with the KiHa 20, the KiHa 52 was lengthened to 21.3 meters to accommodate the dual engines and featured one additional two-tier window between the passenger doors compared to the KiHa 20. These vehicles played a vital role in local transport across the country and were particularly valued for service on lines with steep gradients.
Following the transition to the JR Group, the series continued in service under various JR companies but was eventually retired as the units were gradually replaced by newer models.
