Information
The KiHa 400 series was introduced in 1988 through the modification of KiHa 40 series units, intended to replace the locomotive-hauled express trains—such as the "Soya" on the Soya Main Line—with diesel railcars.
For service on the overnight express "Rishiri," Suhanefu 14-series sleeping cars were included in the consist; in later years, modified KiHa 182-series cars—converted from units previously used for "ozashiki" (tatami-floored) train configurations—were also coupled to the train.
