Information
●The EF510 is an AC/DC electric locomotive that debuted in 2002. Nicknamed "RED THUNDER," it was introduced to replace the EF81 locomotives that had been operating on the Sea of Japan Longitudinal Line. Starting in 2010, the 500-series—owned by JR East—was assigned to the Tabata Depot for use with the "Hokutosei" and "Cassiopeia" sleeper limited express trains; a total of 15 units were newly built and deployed, comprising 13 units in the "Hokutosei" livery (blue body) and two units (Nos. 509 and 510) in the "Cassiopeia" livery (silver body). They played an active role hauling these sleeper trains.
Following the discontinuation of regular service for the "Hokutosei" in 2015 and the "Cassiopeia" the following year, all units were transferred to JR Freight's Toyama Depot. In addition to the Sea of Japan Longitudinal Line, they are currently active in hauling freight trains as far west as Okayama and within the Chukyo region.
