Information
Amtrak launched in 1971 by taking over routes and rolling stock from the private railway companies that had previously operated passenger trains across the United States.
In its early days, Amtrak owned very few vehicles of its own, relying instead on a diverse array of locomotives and passenger cars inherited from those various companies.
We are now releasing a model of one of the most iconic of these vehicles: the GG1 electric locomotive—inherited from the Pennsylvania Railroad and Penn Central—which played a pivotal role in operations on the electrified lines of the East Coast during Amtrak's formative years.
