Information
The KiHa 261 is a limited express diesel train operated by JR Hokkaido; the 1000 series, introduced in 2006, continues to see new units added to the fleet and serves as a mainstay for limited express services.
To create a versatile fleet suitable for purposes such as chartered group trips and school excursions, two five-car trainsets were manufactured based on the 1000 series (specifically the 7th production batch), resulting in the creation of a new classification: the 5000 series.
The first of these sets was named "Hamanasu" and features a striking appearance, with a reddish-purple color scheme—evoking the hues of the *hamanasu* (Japanese rose) flower—applied to the front end and around the doors.
Service began in October 2020, and the trains are utilized for special chartered services as well as scheduled limited express routes, such as the "Okhotsk" and "Taisetsu."
