●The 883 series debuted in 1995 with the aim of speeding up services and enhancing passenger amenities on the Nippo Main Line; it holds the distinction of being JR Kyushu's first tilting train and Japan's first tilting train designed for commercial AC operation. A notable feature is that the front-end design varies depending on the year of manufacture. Following refurbishment work that began in 2005, the fleet was unified with its current metallic blue livery. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of its debut in 2025, the first trainset (AO-1) received a special commemorative wrap and is currently in operation for a limited run throughout the year.
