Information
●The "Akebono" was a limited express sleeper train connecting Ueno and Aomori.
Although it originally ran via the Tohoku Main Line, its route was changed to the Joetsu, Shin'etsu, and Uetsu Main Lines following the 1997 opening of the Akita Shinkansen; it continued to operate as a scheduled service until March 2014.
The train featured a distinctive consist comprising a diverse range of rolling stock, including three private-compartment sleeper cars and "Goron-to Seat" (and "Ladies' Goron-to Seat") carriages, which passengers could use with just a standard fare ticket and a seat reservation ticket.
The 24-24 series, introduced in 1973, was based on the 14-series sleeper cars—which utilized a distributed power supply system—but reverted to a centralized power supply system.
The Ohanefu 24-0 series cars at the Aomori Rolling Stock Center featured a distinctive appearance resulting from modifications such as converting the conductor's compartment window to an inward-opening type and externally mounting the rain gutters on the car ends.
